Silversword (Ahinahina), Maui
The Silversword or Ahinahina (meaning "very grey" in Hawaiian) is endemic to Hawaii and is only found two places on the planet; at high elevations on The Big Island of Hawaii and Maui. The plant, a member of the sunflower family, grows for 5-20 years, flowers then dies. People and feral goats almost eradicated the plant but conservation efforts have preserved the few that remain. This Silversword, about the size of a basketball, was on Haleakala volcano on Maui.
