Haleakala Summit Crater, Maui

The Sliding Sands Trail is the main trail passing through the crater of Haleakala volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui. A number of shorter trails branch off Sliding Sands leading to various sights including this vista of the many colourful cinder cones that dot the crater floor. I drove up to the 3048 m / 10,000 foot summit of Haleakala many times during my stay on Maui to take in the spectacular views. Clouds would move into the "gap" you see in the upper left portion of the photograph and would sometimes cover the crater floor.
